Excavators span a huge size range — from 1-tonne mini-excavators that fit through a garden gate to 30-tonne-plus machines built for large foundations. Renting the wrong size is one of the more common mistakes contractors make, and it's an expensive one: too small and the job takes longer and strains the machine; too large and you're paying for capacity — and site disruption — you didn't need.

Start with three questions

How deep and how wide do you need to dig? Depth and reach determine the minimum boom/arm size you need — this rules out anything too small before cost even enters the conversation.

How tight is site access? Narrow gates, tight urban plots, or basement-level work often rule out larger tracked machines regardless of digging capacity — a mini-excavator may be the only thing that physically fits.

What's the ground like? Soft, wet, or uneven ground needs a machine with the track width and weight distribution to stay stable — this is where an excavator's continuous tracks matter more than a wheeled alternative.

A rough guide

  • Mini-excavators (1–6 tonnes): landscaping, utility trenching, small residential foundations, tight urban sites.
  • Standard excavators (6–20 tonnes): most commercial foundation work, mid-size trenching, general site clearing.
  • Heavy-duty excavators (20 tonnes+): large foundations, bulk earthmoving, demolition support, and sites where volume matters more than manoeuvrability.

Don't guess — describe the job instead

The fastest way to get the right machine isn't picking a tonnage off a chart — it's telling us the actual job: what you're digging, the depth, the access constraints, and the ground conditions. Our team matches that to the nearest, best-fit excavator in our network rather than whatever happens to be sitting idle closest to you.
