Renting a mobile crane is a bigger commitment than most equipment rentals — the crane, the transport, and often a certified operator all need to line up on one day, at one site. When a lift gets delayed or cancelled last-minute, it's rarely the crane's fault. It's almost always a detail nobody confirmed in advance.
Load weight and radius — not just "how heavy"
A crane's lift capacity isn't one number — it drops as the boom extends further from the base. The load weight alone isn't enough information; what matters is the weight at the actual lift radius (how far the load needs to travel from the crane's position). Know both before requesting a crane, or be ready to describe your site layout so it can be worked out for you.
Ground conditions at the crane's setup position
Cranes need firm, level ground to set up outriggers safely — soft soil, a slope, or a spot too close to an excavation can rule out an otherwise capable machine. If your setup area isn't a finished, compacted surface, flag it upfront rather than discovering it's a problem when the crane arrives.
Site access for the crane itself
Mobile cranes are large vehicles before they're even lifting anything. Confirm gate widths, overhead clearances (power lines especially), and turning space for the crane to actually reach its setup position — this is a common point of failure on tighter urban sites.
Lift height and obstructions
Boom reach needs to clear not just the height of the lift itself, but anything between the crane and the placement point — scaffolding, adjacent structures, overhead lines.
The one-line version
Before requesting a mobile crane, have ready: the load weight, roughly how far it needs to travel from the crane's position, what the ground is like at the setup spot, and anything that could block site access or overhead clearance. Tell us all of this upfront and we'll match the right crane and confirm feasibility before committing to a lift date — rather than finding out something doesn't work on the day itself.
